EXCITING
NEWS: High Performance
Program Development
The
OWA has been selected to be among the 30 PSO
(Provincial Sport Organization) to participate in the development of the high
performance management program. This was generated by a renewed effort from
the Ontario government to
increase the participation of Ontario athletes at the Pan American games to be
held in Toronto in 2015. The committee
that will work on the development of the program is made up of Pierre St-Jean
(lead person) Moira Lassen and Andrew Bellerby
with Dan Robitaille as the
alternate.
This
program is the key to our success at
the national and international level and
requires that we involve the whole OWA
community . Please click on the High Performance tab to find out how to give
us your input.
Study
Finds Weightlifting Beneficial To Children
60 year study find weightlifting to be highly beneficial to growing children.
Particularly between the ages of 7 to 12. The study found that contrary to
popular belief weightlifting has no negative side effects for young children
when performed under qualified supervision. Significantly while prepubescent
children did not produce significant gains in muscle mass their strength gains
were significant and attributed completely to neurological adaptations which
occur more readily in younger children.

Referees
and Officials Needed
Ontario is in need of more referees
and officials. It has been decided by the OWA board, that every club across the
province needs to start certifying referee's for any competition that they host.
We are looking for parents, spouses, friends, athletes and anyone who has any
interest in the sport. It is not the OWA's responsibility to supply officials
for competitions. Every club needs to become proactive in training and
certifying officials. The IWF constitution and rules can be found here: http://www.iwf.net/.
